Dog Food Recall – Nutrisca Dry Dog Food

Today has been quite the day in terms of recalls, this one is for potential contamination with the salmonella virus, please read on:

February 11, 2015 – Tuffy’s Pet Foods, Inc. of Perham, Minnesota, is voluntarily recalling specific lots of Nutrisca Chicken and Chick Pea Recipe Dry Dog Food because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

The product was manufactured for Nutrisca by Tuffy’s.

What’s Been Recalled?

The affected product was distributed nationwide to distributors, brokers, retail stores and internet retailers.

The recall is limited to Nutrisca Chicken and Chick Pea Recipe Dry Dog Food in 4 pound bag sizes and bear UPC Code “8 84244 12495 7″ (found on lower back of the bag).

Products included in the recall are identified by the below first 5 digits of the Lot Code (found on upper back of the bag) and “Best by Dates” (found on upper back of the bag).

No other bag sizes or other Nutrisca dog food, cat food, biscuits/treats, supplements or other products are affected by this announcement.

First five digits of Lot Codes include:

  • 4G29P
  • 4G31P
  • 4H01P
  • 4H04P
  • 4H05P

Best By Dates include:

  • Jul 28 16

About Salmonella

Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever.

Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms.

Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting.

Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans.

If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

No Salmonella-related illnesses in people or animals have been reported to date in association with these products.

What Caused the Recall?

The recall was initiated after a routine sampling program by the Ohio Department of Agriculture revealed the presence of Salmonella in one 4 lb. bag of product.

The company is coordinating this voluntary recall with the FDA and is issuing the recall action out of an abundance of caution.

What to Do?

Consumers who purchased the 4 lb. bags of dry dog food product subject to the recall should stop using the product, discard it in a safe manner (for example, a securely covered trash receptacle) and contact Nutrisca at the number below for further information.

Dog Treat Recall – Grill-Phoria Big Bark All Natural Beef Jerky

Another dog treat recall, this one due to salmonella:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — January 30, 2015 — Loveland, CO — Grill-Phoria LLC of Loveland, Colorado is recalling approximately 200, 3.5 oz bags of Big Bark All Natural Beef Jerky Treats for Dogs because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. These bags were distributed and manufactured between September 20, 2014 through January 2, 2015, and do not have lot codes.

Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products. Most people recover from salmonellosis in four to seven days without treatment, but some groups are at higher risk of developing more severe symptoms. These high-risk groups are: children under 5 years of age, the elderly, pregnant women, people with weakened immune systems.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Big Bark All Natural Beef Jerky Treats for Dogswas distributed in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah and Oklahoma through Nor-Sky Pet Supply LLC through independent pet stores. The product is under the Big Bark label and is in a standup pouch that is 3.5 oz in weight labeled as All Natural Beef Jerky Treat. No illnesses have been reported to date.

The recall is a result of a routine sampling program by the Colorado Department of Agriculture which revealed that the finished tested positive for Salmonella. Grill-Phoria has ceased the production and distribution of the product as the company continues their investigation as to what caused the problem.

Consumers who have purchased Big Bark All Natural Beef Jerky Treats for Dogs (3.5 oz Bag) are urged to return the bag to the store that you purchased it from and get a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact Grill-Phoria at between the hours of 9:00 am to 5:00 pm (MST) Monday through Friday at 970-663-4561.

Dog Food Recall Expands – J.J. Fuds Raw Frozen Food

The recall has expanded due to an unspecified contamination:

January 27, 2015 — According to a fax document1 obtained by The Dog Food Advisor, J.J. Fuds of Valparaiso, Indiana is expanding its dog food recall to include 2 more products due to contamination.

The following products have been added to the recall:

The distributor’s fax announcement does not specify the type of contamination. No other information is available.

What to Do?

Due to the limited information provided to The Dog Food Advisor by the distributor, we have included the following text from our earlier recall article dated January 23, 2015.

The recalled product should not be sold or fed to pets.

Dog Treat Recall – Kong Aussie Sticks Treats

Please read the following information about the recall of these treats due to mold contamination:

September 25, 2014 – Kong Aussie Sticks dog treats have been quietly recalled by the product manufacturer, JAKKS Pacific of Walnut, California due to possible contamination with mold.

Kong Aussie Sticks Dog TreatsAs of the time of this writing, neither Kong or JAKKS Pacific has posted any public information webpage giving specific details about this event.

The products being recalled have the following item numbers:

  • Item 75559
  • Item 75560

And these “Best Before” dates:

  • 1/30/16
  • 1/31/16

Where Was the Product Sold?

According to a letter obtained from JAKKS Pacific and forwarded by Kong to The Dog Food Advisor, the recalled product was sold only at PetSmart.

No further store location, online sales or other distribution details have been provided by either company.

Silent Recall?

We are troubled by the covert nature and lack of transparency exhibited by both companies associated with this particular event.

Obtaining confirmation and collecting details about this recall were especially challenging. Apparently, the companies only notified PetSmart and relevant distribution centers.1

And evidently they made no effort to post a public notice.

According to a company spokesperson:

The products were not dried properly so a small percentage of finished goods have gone moldy.

Majority of the product is fine, and the mold was caught at our DC, but some product may have made it to PetSmart so we are recalling all the product at PetSmart and destroying all the product we have at our DC.

What to Do?

According to JAKKS Pacific in that same email, the “product can be returned to PetSmart for a full refund.”

August 26, 2014 – Mars Petcare US has announced a voluntary recall of 22 bags of Pedigree Adult Complete Nutrition dry dog food due to the possible presence of a foreign material.

Pedigree Dog Food RecallThe affected bags were sold in Dollar General stores in four states.

Although the small metal fragments are not embedded in the food itself, they may present a risk of injury if consumed.

The company is working with Dollar General to ensure that the recalled product is no longer sold and is removed from inventory.

What’s Recalled?

Only 15 pound bags of Pedigree Adult Complete Nutrition dry dog food with the production code detailed below were sold at 12 Dollar General stores in the following four states:

  • Arkansas
  • Louisiana
  • Mississippi
  • Tennessee

Each product will have the lot code 432C1KKM03 printed on the back of the bag near the UPC and a Best Before date of 8/5/15.

Pedigree Dog Food Recall Package Details

No other Pedigree products are affected, including any other variety of dry dog food, wet dog food or dog treats.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – May 14, 2014 – Manchester, CT – Bravo is recalling select lots and product(s) of Bravo Pet Food because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

However, healthy cats and dogs rarely become sick from Listeria. Animals ill with Listeria will display symptoms similar to the ones listed above for humans. People who have concerns about whether their pet has Listeria should contact their veterinarian.

The recalled product was distributed nationwide to distributors, retail stores, internet retailers and directly to consumers. The product can be identified by the batch ID code (best used by date) printed on the side of the plastic tube or on a label on the box.

This voluntary recall has been issued because the FDA has reported an independent lab detected the bacteria in a sample during a recent review. The company has received a limited number of reports of dogs experiencing nausea and diarrhea that may be associated with these specific products. The company has received no reports of human illness as a result of these products.

Bravo discontinued all manufacturing in New Zealand on October 10, 2013. Bravo will immediately start working with distributors and retailers to properly dispose of any affected product left on freezer shelves. The company will also be announcing the recall to pet owners to ensure they dispose of any affected product that has been purchased.

Bravo is issuing this action out of an abundance of caution and sincerely regrets any inconvenience to pet owners as a result of this announcement.

The recalled product should not be sold or fed to pets. Pet owners who have the affected product at home should dispose of this product in a safe manner (example, a securely covered trash receptacle). Dog Treat Recall – Joey’s Chicken Jerky Treats

Here is another dog treat recall, please read on it is especially important for those in New Hampshire:

September 10, 2013 — The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has announced a voluntary recall of Joey’s Jerky Chicken Jerky treats due to possible contamination with Salmonella bacteria.

Joey's Jerky Chicken Jerky TreatsA total of 21 people in Merrimack and Hillsborough Counties have been identified with the same strain of the illness.

However, no deaths have occurred.

Joey’s Jerky is produced in New Hampshire and the manufacturer, Kritter’s Kitchen Kreations, LLC, has voluntarily recalled all of the product.

Joey’s Jerky was sold at the following six stores:

  • America’s Pet in Hudson
  • Blue Seal in Bow
  • K9 Kaos in Dover
  • Osborne’s Agway in Concord
  • Sandy’s Pet Food Center in Concord
  • The Yellow Dogs Barn in Barrington

Confirmation through laboratory testing of the jerky is pending at the New Hampshire Public Health Labs.

What to Do?

DHHS is asking people to determine if they have any of these jerky treats at home — and if so, to discard them.

Only one bag of the product was found to be contaminated.

No additional Purina or Purina ONE dog or cat products are involved in this recall at this time.

And according to the company, no salmonella-related illness has been reported to date in association with this product.

The only product being recalled in this event is Purina ONE beyOnd Our White Meat Chicken & Whole Barley Recipe Adult Dry Dog Food in the 3.5 pound bag size.

Recipe Friday – Chicken and Rice Crockpot Style For Dogs

This is a great recipe for augmenting the food you feed to your dog.  Make sure to take into account your dog’s weight and activity level and feed accordingly:

Ingredients:
Base

  • 1 cup brown rice
  • 2 cups water

Vegetables

  • 1/2 lb. green beans, broken into segments
  • 1 medium sweet potato, raw, cut into medium-sized chunks (leave skin on)
  • 3 carrots, sliced into about 1″ thick rounds

Protein

  • 2 boneless chicken breasts (with or without skin)

 

Directions:
1. Put all ingredients into the crockpot in the order given (layer, don’t mix).

2. Cook on low for about 8 hours, on high for about 5 hours.

3. When done, stir, breaking up the chicken into small pieces. Everything will be quite soft.

4. Let cool and serve; can be used with a quality kibble or by itself, in a serving size appropriate for your dog’s weight and activity level.

Refrigerate unused portion; keeps up to three days.

Substitutions are allowed! For vegetables, try broccoli florets, zucchini, spinach or any of several types of squash. For the protein source, beef cubes, turkey or lamb also work. Use organic ingredients if possible.

Why Pet Nutrition Matters

I thought I would share an interesting article my vet sent to me:

The First Step in Preventative Care

With more than half of all dogs and cats overweight or obese, pets are increasingly at risk for a number of chronic health problems, according to the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). An appropriate, balanced diet can make a significant difference for a pet’s overall health, reducing the risk for chronic health conditions including heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and other types of chronic pain.

Nutrition counseling and weight management are an essential part of every veterinary wellness exam. Just like humans, dogs and cats have unique wellness needs. A one-size-fits-all approach to dietary management overlooks important aspect of nutrition counseling. Today’s veterinarian makes dietary recommendations based on a pet’s specific needs, such as weight loss, organ function, mobility restrictions, or a chronic pain condition. A veterinary nutrition evaluation will also take into account a pet’s medical history, food preferences, and current activity level.

For some health conditions, dietary management can completely resolve the problem, no medication or surgery required. For example, consider the case of Max, a dog who was overweight and suffered from disc-related back pain. Max had been on chronic pain medication, including muscle relaxers, but was still unable to be active. Dietary management helped Max safely lose weight and today he romps in the neighborhood dog park like he was never in pain. The lesson here is simple: nutrition and dietary management matters.

Dietary management should start as soon as pet owners introduce a new pet into their family. Puppies and kittens have unique nutrition requirements in order to grow into healthy adult pets. For example, large-breed puppies should be fed a large-breed puppy food; this food helps these puppies safely grow slowly over time. Rapid weight gain should be avoided as it can strain the musculoskeletal system and increase the risk for skeletal and joint problems, including hip dysplasia.

In addition to considering which pet food to use, the AAHA also reminds pet owners to keep a close eye on their pets’ treats. Treats can be a sneaky source of calories and sabotage a pet’s weight management diet. Positive praise is just as effective and calorie free.

An extra few pounds may seem insignificant to us, but those pounds can adversely affect a pet’s health. Veterinary care that proactively monitors a pet’s weight and diet is the best way to keep pets healthy and active throughout their lives.

How to Pick the Right Food for Your Pet

With an almost overwhelming number of food choices in today’s pet superstores, choosing the right food for your pet can be a challenge. Your veterinarian can help. Ask your veterinarian the following:

•    How much food should I feed my pet each day?
•    Should I feed my pet once or twice per day?
•    Does my pet need a special dietary food to address a health problem?

Don’t wait until your pet is sick or overweight to ask these questions; a proactive approach will keep your pet healthy and active for life.
