Dog Food Recall – Nutrisca Dry Dog Food

Today has been quite the day in terms of recalls, this one is for potential contamination with the salmonella virus, please read on:

February 11, 2015 – Tuffy’s Pet Foods, Inc. of Perham, Minnesota, is voluntarily recalling specific lots of Nutrisca Chicken and Chick Pea Recipe Dry Dog Food because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

The product was manufactured for Nutrisca by Tuffy’s.

What’s Been Recalled?

The affected product was distributed nationwide to distributors, brokers, retail stores and internet retailers.

The recall is limited to Nutrisca Chicken and Chick Pea Recipe Dry Dog Food in 4 pound bag sizes and bear UPC Code “8 84244 12495 7″ (found on lower back of the bag).

Products included in the recall are identified by the below first 5 digits of the Lot Code (found on upper back of the bag) and “Best by Dates” (found on upper back of the bag).

No other bag sizes or other Nutrisca dog food, cat food, biscuits/treats, supplements or other products are affected by this announcement.

First five digits of Lot Codes include:

About Salmonella

Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever.

Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms.

Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting.

Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans.

No Salmonella-related illnesses in people or animals have been reported to date in association with these products.

What Caused the Recall?

The recall was initiated after a routine sampling program by the Ohio Department of Agriculture revealed the presence of Salmonella in one 4 lb. bag of product.

The company is coordinating this voluntary recall with the FDA and is issuing the recall action out of an abundance of caution.

What to Do?

Consumers who purchased the 4 lb. bags of dry dog food product subject to the recall should stop using the product, discard it in a safe manner (for example, a securely covered trash receptacle) and contact Nutrisca at the number below for further information.

February 11, 2015 — Pet International of Miami, Florida is recalling 1500 units of its 6″ Beef Trachea Pet Treat because it may be contaminated with Salmonella.

What’s Being Recalled?

The potentially affected product will pertain to a particular lot number, and are specific to a particular size of the pouch it’s sold in. Anyone having these products should verify the following:

  • Buster’s Natural Pet Supply Beef Trachea Treat
  • Lot Code: 8501450
  • Size: 6″ Beef Trachea / 12 Pack Plastic Pouch
  • UPC Code: 8501450

No illnesses have been reported to date. The company is still warning consumers that if any of the above information is on the package you have, do not feed it to any animals.

It may be hazardous and should be disposed of immediately.

Where Was It Distributed?

The affected product was distributed to retail stores in the following Colorado Cities: Conifer and Lakewood.

What Caused This Recall?

The recall was as the result of a routine sampling program by the Colorado Department of Agriculture and analyzed by FDA, obtained from Buster’s Natural Pet Supply in Conifer, CO. and found to be positive for Salmonella.

The sampled product had a Buster’s label but was manufactured by Pet International.

Buster’s Natural Pet Supply recalled the entire product from the two stores that the distributor sells it. Pet International Inc. continues their investigation as to what caused the problem.

Do not touch the product in any way. However, if you do, it’s recommended to wash your hands immediately with an antibacterial soap.

Consumers who have purchased 6″ Beef Trachea with Buster’s Natural Pet Supply Label on it and are wishing to be refunded because of the recall, can take the product back to where it was purchased (with receipt).

A special form will be provided to be filled out as well. Both the form and the receipt are needed for the refund.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — January 30, 2015 — Loveland, CO — Grill-Phoria LLC of Loveland, Colorado is recalling approximately 200, 3.5 oz bags of Big Bark All Natural Beef Jerky Treats for Dogs because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. These bags were distributed and manufactured between September 20, 2014 through January 2, 2015, and do not have lot codes.

Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products. Most people recover from salmonellosis in four to seven days without treatment, but some groups are at higher risk of developing more severe symptoms. These high-risk groups are: children under 5 years of age, the elderly, pregnant women, people with weakened immune systems.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Big Bark All Natural Beef Jerky Treats for Dogswas distributed in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah and Oklahoma through Nor-Sky Pet Supply LLC through independent pet stores. The product is under the Big Bark label and is in a standup pouch that is 3.5 oz in weight labeled as All Natural Beef Jerky Treat. No illnesses have been reported to date.

The recall is a result of a routine sampling program by the Colorado Department of Agriculture which revealed that the finished tested positive for Salmonella. Grill-Phoria has ceased the production and distribution of the product as the company continues their investigation as to what caused the problem.

Consumers who have purchased Big Bark All Natural Beef Jerky Treats for Dogs (3.5 oz Bag) are urged to return the bag to the store that you purchased it from and get a full refund. Dog Food Recall Expands – J.J. Fuds Raw Frozen Food

The recall has expanded due to an unspecified contamination:

January 27, 2015 — According to a fax document1 obtained by The Dog Food Advisor, J.J. Fuds of Valparaiso, Indiana is expanding its dog food recall to include 2 more products due to contamination.

Why It’s Being Recalled

The recall was initiated after routine testing by the Nebraska Department of Agriculture revealed the presence of Salmonella in two lots of product.

This batch tested negative by a third party independent laboratory prior to release for distribution to consumers.

No additional products affected by this recall.

The company has received no reports of illness in either people or animals associated with these products to date.

Other Products Being Withdrawn

In addition to the voluntary recall of the above products, Bravo has chosen to voluntarily withdraw the following poultry products from the marketplace to provide its customers with the certainty of safety.

Those products include all sizes (2 lb., 5 lb. and 10 lb.) of Bravo Chicken Blend(s), Bravo Turkey Blend(s), Bravo Balance Chicken Balance and Bravo Balance Premium Turkey Formula frozen raw diet products with best used by dates between June 20, 2016 and September 18, 2016.

This is being done out of an abundance of caution despite no evidence of any manufacturing defect or distribution problem.

None of these products are known to have tested positive for the presence of pathogens.

This market withdrawal has not been requested by the FDA but is being conducted voluntarily by Bravo.

What to Do

The recalled product should not be sold or fed to pets.

Pet owners who have the affected product at home should dispose of this product in a safe manner (for example, a securely covered trash receptacle).

Customers who have purchased the recalled pet food can return to the store where purchased and submit the Product Recall Claim Form available on the Bravo website for a full refund or store credit.

Dog Treat Recall – Kong Aussie Sticks Treats

Please read the following information about the recall of these treats due to mold contamination:

September 25, 2014 – Kong Aussie Sticks dog treats have been quietly recalled by the product manufacturer, JAKKS Pacific of Walnut, California due to possible contamination with mold.

Kong Aussie Sticks Dog TreatsAs of the time of this writing, neither Kong or JAKKS Pacific has posted any public information webpage giving specific details about this event.

The products being recalled have the following item numbers:

  • Item 75559
  • Item 75560

And these “Best Before” dates:

  • 1/30/16
  • 1/31/16

Where Was the Product Sold?

According to a letter obtained from JAKKS Pacific and forwarded by Kong to The Dog Food Advisor, the recalled product was sold only at PetSmart.

No further store location, online sales or other distribution details have been provided by either company.

Silent Recall?

We are troubled by the covert nature and lack of transparency exhibited by both companies associated with this particular event.

Obtaining confirmation and collecting details about this recall were especially challenging. Apparently, the companies only notified PetSmart and relevant distribution centers.1

And evidently they made no effort to post a public notice.

According to a company spokesperson:

The products were not dried properly so a small percentage of finished goods have gone moldy.

Majority of the product is fine, and the mold was caught at our DC, but some product may have made it to PetSmart so we are recalling all the product at PetSmart and destroying all the product we have at our DC.

What to Do?

According to JAKKS Pacific in that same email, the “product can be returned to PetSmart for a full refund.”

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

Red Flannel® Cat Food was manufactured by a third-party manufacturer for PMI. The product was sold through dealers to customers distributed in the following states: Alabama, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, North Carolina, North Dakota, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Vermont, Wisconsin and West Virginia.

The lot number is printed on the lower back side of the bag in a white box on the right-hand side. The lot number will be preceded by a time stamp that will be unique to each bag. (Example 14:32) The lot number and best-by date impacted by this recall are as follows:

The UPC code for the recalled product is: 7 42869 00058 5.

No other products/lot numbers are affected by this recall.

Customers should immediately discontinue use of and return impacted product to their dealer for a full refund or replacement. We continue to work with impacted dealers and distributors to trace the bags.

Planning For Your (Dog’s or Cat’s) Health Care

This is an article I got from Sasha’s vet.  I put dog and cat in brackets because I think this could apply to both, even though the article says Dog’s health care.  Please read on:

Before adopting a dog, take a moment to consider the amount of care your pet will require and your ability to provide that care. Too often a cute face and wagging tail inspires individuals to bring home dogs without really considering the amount of time and financial resources required to raise healthy and happy dogs. As a result, animal shelters fill and pets do not receive the care they deserve.

Budget

Before adopting, look at your household budget. Dogs should have a yearly check-up at the veterinarian and get the required vaccines. Don’t forget the daily expense of pet food, medications, toys, and other supplies. Keep in mind, the bigger the animal, the higher the cost. Before you settle on adopting a St. Bernard or Great Dane, consider the quantity of food the animal will require and how much room your budget has to accommodate your new pet’s appetite. Remember to calculate your pet’s average expenses into your monthly budget as well as a reserve emergency savings for any accidents or unexpected trips to the veterinarian. If you don’t have emergency savings available, pet insurance might be a responsible option; the monthly cost will be consistent and most of your pet’s veterinary care will be covered. You can check on-line to compare the dozen pet health insurance companies. Be sure to ask about exclusions or what is not covered. You can always contact your veterinary office for information about the specific cost of care.

Veterinary Appointments

Regular veterinary appointments are necessary for your dog’s welfare. When bringing a new puppy or dog home, schedule an appointment with your veterinarian as soon as possible to screen your pet for any unknown conditions and to make sure all vaccinations are up to date. Your veterinarian will also help you select the best food for your dog, answer any questions you might have about making your home safe for your dog, and help you to provide the best care for your pet throughout its different stages of life.

Planning Ahead

Planning for a dog’s future is often overlooked, but should always be taken into consideration. If you have a dog at home, carry a pet emergency notification card in your wallet. If something prevents you from returning home, an emergency contact will be notified that your pet is in need of care in your absence. Establish either a formal or informal agreement with a trusted individual who will be able to care for your pet in your absence. Be sure this individual will have the time and financial resources which your pet needs. Keep a pet folder with all of your pet’s information (medications, food, habits/behavior, and veterinary records) and instructions with your other important documents.

Your Dog’s First Visit to the Veterinarian

During your pet’s appointment, your veterinarian will likely ask you a few common questions. Consider these questions before you arrive to ensure an efficient check up.

1. How long have you had your pet?

2. Where did you adopt him or her?

3. What vaccinations has your pet had? When?

4. What do you feed your pet?

5. Is your pet drinking more or less water than usual?

6. Has your pet lost or gained weight?

7. Has your pet displayed any odd behavior or symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, or vomiting?

8. Does your pet go outside?

9. Has your pet ever suffered any serious medical condition?

Contact your veterinarian to schedule a health screening for your pet. Be sure to ask your veterinarian when you should schedule your pet’s next appointment.
