Product Review – Thundershirt

Thundershirt is a product for dogs that promises much and delivers even more.  It is a shirt for dogs that is used to help an overexcited or anxiety ridden dog.  It claims to help a dog who gets frightened of thunder storms separation anxiety, excessive barking, over anxious when guests come to visit, and an overall hyperactive dog that has not responded to any other treatment.

For us, Sasha had severe separation anxiety, was hyper active and used to shiver and shake and hide during thunder storms.  She used to whimper and whine and would pace, pant and bark and chew when we would leave her alone for any longer than 10 minutes.

Thundershirt comes in sizes xxsmall to xx large.  They should fit snugly, they are made of stretchy cotton material with velcro for keeping it on your dog.

I will say that this shirt has been a miracle.  Sasha does not get upset when we leave, during storms she stays calm (and has even fallen asleep, I am sharing pictures).  She does not whimper and whine anymore.  She hardly barks and she is an all round happier, playful dog.

If your dog is suffering, think about using this product.  If you are using it when there is a storm, try to put it on about a half hour before the storm starts.  It usually helps to keep it on for that amount of time.

Here is a video list that explains much better than I can about what the Thundershirt does.  They even released a Thundershirt for cats.

Final Verdict: If your dog has anxiety of any kind and needs something to help them, rather than put them on medication, try this product.  It is wonderful and I can’t imagine not having this and using it.  It is for sale on .  Try it and I am sure you won’t be disappointed.

Sasha before the storm, feeling anxious, then Sasha during the storm.  It was thundering like crazy and she was sound asleep:

Product Review – Catit Raffia Toy Mouse On A Stick

This toy is pretty basic, it is a fake mouse attached to a stick with a string.  The price is right on for this simple, yet hours of fun toy.

The best part of this toy is that it is interactive and you can play with your cat, teach it hunting and prey skills, and watch your cat pounce, jump and have fun.  My favorite part is to watch Isis stalk the toy as I drag it along the floor.  She is a butt wiggler before she pounces and that always gives me a good laugh.  Of course, she runs away when I laugh at her shenanigans.  Then comes right back to play more and more with this toy.

The one drawback is that the string tends to break, but an easy fix is tying it tighter or double knotting it, or even drilling a hole and tying the string through two holes.  It really is a simple toy that can keep your cat occupied for hours.

Final Verdict: Isis really enjoyed this toy and loves it when I drag it out once a week for playtime.  She does not get tired of it because I don’t keep it out for her to play with all the time.  I think that is the best way to keep toys “fresh” and from getting old and boring for cats.  She loves to bat, stalk, pounce and run away from the toy.  It is well worth the price on and can’t be beat.  Hopefully your cat will love it as much as Isis does.  Since it’s Christmas soon, this is a great present for your fur baby!

Product Review – Planet Dog Orbee Tuff Fruit & Veggies with Treat Spot

This toxic free rubberized bouncy toy with a spot to put healthy treats, makes for a toy that your puppy or even older dog may enjoy, as long as your dog doesn’t try to destroy it the moment it’s put on the floor for playtime.

The toy comes in different shapes of fruits and veggies: strawberry eggplant, and artichoke.  There is a larger hole at the top where you can put treats in.  I made some peanut butter dog bones and broke them up and put them in the treat for Sasha to figure out how to get it out.

She seemed to enjoy it for a while, she would paw at it and roll it around, getting a few treats out.  This lasted about 15 minutes and then she tried to destroy the toy.  I took it away and gave it back to her the next day.  She played with it for a little longer before trying to destroy it.

Finally after about a week, she has worked up to being able to play with it for a half hour before it becomes time to destroy.

Final verdict: The toy is a great one, good for puppies who like to learn and for you to teach them how to get something out of the toy, it is interactive and can keep them busy for longer periods of time.  I would still observe them while playing, just in case they chew through it and start to eat the rubber, it may be a choking hazard.  It’s not easy to destroy, but just to be on the safe side, be at the ready if your dog is a chewer.  Recommended for puppies, slight recommendation for dogs, as long as they don’t destroy the toy.  The toy is for sale on

Product Review – Petmate Fat Cat Classic Crackler

This is a toy that is soft, stuffed and has organic catnip inside, with some crackle type material inside that when played with, sounds like a plastic bag crumpling up.  Your cat may play with this for hours on end, and then we all know what happens next.  They tend to like to have a long nap after hard playing.

We bought this for Isis and in order to get her to play with anything, we have to play with it ourselves.  So we did for a while, then we doused it with our own catnip.  I then left it in the middle of the floor.  Isis began to stalk it, then wiggled her butt and pounced on it a good four or five times.  She continued to play with it, until she dragged it off somewhere to play on her back and bite down on it.  Each time the crackling material would make noise, it seemed to encourage her to play harder.  After all that, she had a nice, long nap.

She continued to play with the toy quite a bit over the next two months, so much so that we needed to buy a replacement because the stuffing began to spill out of it.  But at $4.49, it’s not a big deal.  We should have bought two to begin with, and if you have a cat that plays hard, you might consider buying two so that your cat never runs out of it.

Final verdict: Highly recommend for any cat that likes to play hard and likes catnip toys.  Especially recommend for kittens as this toy seems to help teach and encourage stalking and hunting skills.  The only downside is having to replace the toy, but I would think that happens to toys that tend to get played with often.  The price can’t be beat, and it is offered on

Product Review – Bergan Turbo Scratcher Cat Toy

This week’s product review is the Bergan Turbo Scratcher Cat Toy.  It is a blue, round toy, with cardboard in the middle and a track around the outside of it for a ping pong ball to roll around in.

The idea is that if your cat doesn’t like to use a scratching post, sisal rope scratcher, or any other kind of scratcher, they may use the cardboard as a scratcher/claw sharpener.

The cat is supposed to bat the ball around the track and is supposed to have hours of fun playing with this toy.

At first, Isis wasn’t into the cardboard, but we took some catnip and rubbed it into the cardboard, this caused her to scratch and bite at it, so that did the job well.

She will sometimes bat at the ball in the track, other times it seems to freak her out.  If we play with it, with her, she will get into it for a while, but grows tired of it sooner rather than later.

Final Verdict: This one is a toss up.  While Isis does play with it and does use it as a scratcher (she uses her kitty condo and sisal scratcher as well), she wasn’t too keen on the ball in the track.  I would recommend it for younger cats who are just learning that the furniture is not their playground/scratching posts.  Also cats who like to chase things will love the ball in the track.  Isis does like it, just not as much as I hoped.  Slight recommendation.

Product Review – Kong Extreme Kong

If you have a dog that loves interactive, treat-filled toys, the Kong may be right for your dog, but with reservation.

Sasha loves toys that have treats in them, she goes nuts for them.  Sasha is also a chewer.  She has calmed down considerably from when we first adopted her over a year ago, but she still has her moments.

The Kong Extreme is another toy in the Kong toy line that promises it is virtually indestructible.  You can put a treat inside and your dog can figure out how to get it out, thus making the dog think, and play at the same time.

For Sasha, we bought both the large and king sizes just to make sure she would have something that wouldn’t destruct in a matter of seconds.  (We won’t discuss how it took her  30 seconds to rip apart a plush toy she received as a present…ahem, anyway!) We placed a Bully Stick that was thick enough to fill the hole at the bottom of the Kong.

We gave her the treat and watched her carefully.  We tried the large size Kong first.  It seemed all right for about two minutes and then it happened, she chewed on the Kong for a very short time and it started to come apart.

The next day, we tried the king size Kong.  Same type treat inside it, gave it to Sasha and watched her.  For about ten minutes, all went well.  Then it happened again.  The Kong was chewed on (and not much, just softer mouthing and not back teeth chewing, which usually is the more aggressive type chewing) and it started to come apart.  Talk about frustration.

The Kong would be a wonderful toy for dogs that are older, and ones that aren’t so…mouthy or that love to chew.  Sasha had them wrecked within minutes and that’s a bit too quick and too expensive for us.

Final verdict: Overall, I cannot recommend this toy for people who have dogs that love to chew.  Sasha loved it, but we didn’t want to chance her eating the pieces of rubber that were coming off the Kong.   Right now on Wag, the Kongs are on sale they range in price from $5.99 – $20.99.  If your dog is not a chewer and likes toys with treats in them, this might be a perfect match.

Product Review – Thermo Kitty Mat

The new Saturday column will be product reviews of things I have bought and use with Sasha and Isis.  I will be as honest and detailed as possible.  I am NOT getting paid or any free products from any company that I review their products.

Considering that winter is right around the corner and the cold weather is just easing its way in, I decided to purchase a thermo mat (heated mat) for Isis, since she gets cold easily and loves to find the warm spots all over the house.

I searched my favorite website (, where your first order is 15% off, and free 2 day delivery with orders over $49), and found the K&H Thermo Kitty Mat.  It 12.5 x 25 inches, so it’s a great size for even big kitties!  It is about a half inch thick and has a dual thermostat which is burried within the foam.  It heats up to about 12-15 degrees above ambient temperature and then adapts to your cat’s body temperature.

Now, Isis is not a fan of new things, so we kind of had to trick her to get her to use it.  So we placed  the mat underneath the covering on her window perch.  We sprayed it with Feliway spray and within a day, she was sleeping on it for hours at a time.  It doesn’t get that warm to the touch and it is fine to use without the perch if your cat doesn’t mind sleeping on a mat.  I would suggest placing the mat somewhere up high in your home, or on the bed, if you allow your cat to sleep on your bed.  Most cats prefer higher places.

The product comes in two colors: mocha and sage.  The price ranges from $37.09-$39.99.

Final verdict: I love this mat, and would recommend it to anyone whose cat needs a little extra heat for the winter.  Also, older cats would benefit because the heat will help with joints and if they have arthritis, the heat will most likely help your cat feel better and move easier.  Isis has a new favorite thing and the K&H Thermo Kitty Mat is it.  It is well made, seems it will last a long time and the price is very reasonable.  If it will help her once she gets older with her joints and if she gets arthritis, I consider this a great investment.  Highly recommended.
